Polyethylene glycol (PEG) is a polymer of ethylene oxide. It acts mainly as a solvent and solubilizer for a vast number of substances only sparingly soluble in water, e.g. essential oils, active ingredients. It also upports rheology (viscosity increase, dimensional stability of toothpaste) by improving body and foam texture/mouthfeel, supports shine and a glossy surface of toothpaste/gel and acts as a humectant.
